What’s the difference between synthetic pigments and carotenoids?

Synthetic pigments

The color of egg yolk or the skin of broiler chickens is often associated with the health status of the bird. The depth of color is determined by the preferences of the local market. Synthetic pigments are often used to acquire the desired coloration. However, their potential carcinogenic effects are a matter of concern.

Carotenoids

Carotenoids are natural pigments that can be found in flowers or fruit, and are very suitable to be used for the coloring of egg yolks or broiler skin. Besides this, carotenoids also act as antioxidants and some are precursors to vitamin A. Thanks to these properties, carotenoids have been associated with a higher hatchability, lower embryo mortality, better chick quality and  viability during the first week post-hatch. In addition, a better sperm quality and higher fertility has been found when supplementing male and female breeders with carotenoids.

Colonut

Colonut is a natural pigment extracted from marigold flowers containing the carotenoids:

  • lutein
  • zeaxanthin
